Apple Inc. (AAPL.US) recently disclosed its strategic use of Amazon Web Services (AWS) proprietary AI chips at the AWS re:Invent conference. Notably, Apple is evaluating Amazon's newest AI chip, Trainium2, for pre-training its AI models like Apple Intelligence. Benoit Dupin, Apple's Senior Director of Machine Learning and AI, highlighted the robust relationship between the two tech giants, underscoring AWS's reliable infrastructure and global reach.

During the event, Apple elaborated on its decade-long collaboration with AWS, utilizing services that power Siri, Apple Maps, and Apple Music. A vital part of this partnership is the use of Amazon's Inferencia and Graviton chips, which Apple claims enhance search efficiency by 40%. This collaboration is particularly noteworthy as Amazon seeks to solidify its position in AI cloud services against Microsoft’s Azure and Google Cloud.

The decision to consider Amazon's Trainium2 chips, which are now available for lease, indicates their potential beyond inference tasks to serve economical and efficient AI model training. Dupin noted that preliminary evaluations of Trainium2 demonstrated a 50% improvement in pre-training efficiency, advocating its use against traditional x86 processors by Intel and AMD.

Matt Garman, CEO of AWS, affirmed Apple's role as an early adopter and beta tester of the Trainium chips. He revealed Apple's proactive engagement with AWS, seeking to enhance their generative AI capabilities and support the development of Apple Intelligence through AWS's technological infrastructure.

Apple’s exploration of non-NVIDIA training alternatives could set a precedent for other companies, signaling the feasibility of various chip architectures. This diversification could potentially reduce reliance on NVIDIA's expensive GPUs, which dominate the AI training landscape. Apple’s approach involves leveraging its custom chips and M-series processors to offload complex processing tasks, further integrating with its existing hardware ecosystem.

As Apple prepares to roll out its first major generative AI product suite, it aims to expand features within Apple Intelligence, like notification summarization and email rewriting, and to integrate with services like OpenAI's ChatGPT. The tech giant plans to introduce new functionalities for Siri, including application control and natural language processing, reinforcing its commitment to advancing AI without solely relying on NVIDIA-backed cloud infrastructures.
