Apple's Ambitious Siri Revamp Faces Delays Amid Quest for Perfection
Apple has set an internal target to launch its upgraded Siri in the spring of 2026, according to tech journalist Mark Gurman. Insider reports have indicated that the Siri team aims to introduce the refined version in iOS 26.4, which is usually released in March each year. Although there is no specific release date yet, Apple's response has reaffirmed its plan to upgrade Siri "next year." Insiders suggest that if development progresses smoothly in the upcoming weeks, AppleAAPL-- might consider previewing these features during the fall launch of new iPhones.
The technological development involves an "App Intents" system designed to allow Siri more precise control of applications and in-app operations within Apple devices. This upgrade seems to be part of Apple's broader goal of integrating more personal context understanding into its AI framework.
Despite the initial excitement during Apple's 2024 WWDC announcement regarding a comprehensive AI-driven Siri revamp, plans have faced delays. Apple's software senior vice president Craig Federighi highlighted the quality issues revealed during internal tests despite showcasing functioning software at WWDC. These tests indicate that Siri's error rates exceeded Apple's high expectations for product reliability.
Federighi emphasized the importance of product reliability, stating that their goal of achieving a very high standard wasn't met in the anticipated timeline. Apple is consequently committed to delaying the release rather than facing customer disappointment with a sub-par product launch.
The challenge lies in achieving reliable device automation, a current industry hurdle. Apple’s intent to be the first to market a mature product is coupled with an acknowledgment that early versions proved promising but ultimately lacked sufficient reliability to meet Apple's standards.
