Apple AirPods 5's "Best-in-Class" Open-Ear ANC Is a Qualifier It Chose to Win


Apple's AirPods 5 pitch opens with the phrase "best-in-class open-ear Active Noise Cancellation." Read it as carefully as AppleAAPL-- hopes you won't, because the word doing all the work is "open-ear." That single qualifier shrinks the claim from "best noise cancellation on the market" to "least-bad noise cancellation among earbuds that leave your ear canal open." Those are different products, and only one of them is a real technical contest.
The physics is unforgiving. Active noise cancellation works by reading ambient sound with microphones and firing back an "anti-noise" wave that is the mirror image of it, so the two cancel when they meet. That trick is powerful only inside a sealed cavity — the closed chamber a snug ear tip creates — because the cavity holds the anti-noise in place and passively blocks outside sound from entering. Leave the ear canal open and there is no isolation to exploit: the anti-noise wave leaks out into the room, and ambient noise pours in from every direction at once. Without a seal, the system can't create a quiet zone, only a localized "bubble" of partial cancellation, and its effect fades almost entirely above roughly 3 kHz — exactly the band where speech, alarms, and traffic live. Independent measurements of the open-ear approach put the reduction near 10 dB, a rounding error next to what a sealed design achieves.

Apple isn't wrong about its claim. It's just competing in a category it deliberately chose to win.
Consider what Apple chose to benchmark against. The AirPods 5's "up to 50 percent more external noise removed" is measured against the AirPods 4 — an open-ear Apple product, tested by Apple itself under the IEC 60268-24 standard "against the bestselling wireless open-ear headphones commercially available." Every name in that sentence is an unsealed bud. Meanwhile the product that actually owns Apple's best-in-class title, the AirPods Pro 3, is marketed as the "world's best in-ear Active Noise Cancellation." The AirPods 5 doesn't claim to touch it. If your real question is maximum silence on a plane, Apple is quietly pointing you upmarket to the sealed set. The new "multiport acoustic architecture" and computational-audio work behind the open-ear gains are a genuine engineering effort inside a hard acoustic box — credit where it's due — but the headline frames the effort as though it had beaten the physics, rather than worked around the edge of it.
Now the part investors actually care about: what this does to Apple's numbers.
AirPods live inside Apple's Wearables, Home and Accessories segment, which pulled in about $35.7 billion in fiscal 2025 — down 4 percent, its third consecutive annual decline, after peaking near $41 billion in 2022. It is the only Apple segment that shrank over that stretch, and it is roughly 8.6 percent of a $416 billion company. Analysts peg AirPods alone at around $10 billion of that — under 2.5 percent of total revenue, in a low-margin accessory line being sold for $129 and $149. This launch, pulled forward to an annual iPhone-style refresh cadence, is the playbook of a company trying to talk new life into a mature accessory franchise, not a growth engine being switched on.
The market's reaction speaks for itself. The stock sat basically flat at about $315 the day the announcement landed — a $4.6 trillion company, roughly 36 times trailing earnings, already priced around iPhone and Services growth, treating a sub-2.5-percent accessory refresh as the non-event it is.
That is the read to carry out of this. AirPods 5 is a hardware-review question, not an Apple-thesis question. Judge it on the merits and the "best-in-class open-ear ANC" headline is real but precisely bounded: it beats every other bud that refuses to seal, and it beats Apple's own last open-ear model. It does not beat Apple's sealed ANC, and it doesn't come close to moving a company whose stock is up 26 percent over four months on iPhone momentum. The clever part of the press release is engineering a qualifier the product can honestly win. The investor-grade mistake would be mistaking that qualifier for a reason to change your mind about Apple.
