Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela, a 41-year-old South African beer brewing master, is believed to be the first Black woman in South Africa to own a craft brewery. She aims to open the country's multibillion-dollar beer-brewing industry to more Black people and women. Nxusani-Mawela is teaching 13 young Black graduates, mostly women, the art of beer making at her microbrewery in Johannesburg. Her classes focus on beer varieties and brewing techniques, and students will spend six months exploring both international and African beers, followed by another six months of work placement.
