Anthropic, the AI startup backed by Amazon and founded by former OpenAI executives, announced a significant milestone for their AI solutions on Tuesday. The company has unveiled an AI agent that can perform complex tasks on a computer similarly to a human. This agent is designed to enhance productivity by representing users in executing multi-step and intricate tasks. These tasks are often tailored to specific business functions and can be customized on large AI models.

Renowned for Claude, a popular chatbot akin to OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, Anthropic remains a key player in the AI arms race. Major tech companies such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta are all striving to dominate a market expected to generate over $1 trillion in revenue within the next decade.

The new computer-operating capability from Anthropic is part of their latest AI models, enabling the technology to interpret on-screen content, select buttons, input text, navigate websites, and execute tasks through any software and real-time internet browsing. According to Anthropic's Chief Scientist Jared Kaplan, this tool can operate computers much like humans do and can complete tasks comprising "dozens or even hundreds of steps."

The early adoption of this tool by Amazon, along with beta-testing by clients such as Asana, Canva, and Notion, underscores its potential impact. Kaplan noted that the company had been developing this tool since early this year and made it available to developers in a beta release on Tuesday. The team aims to open its use to consumers and business clients in the upcoming months or early next year.

Looking ahead, potential consumer applications include booking flights, scheduling appointments, filling out forms, conducting online research, and submitting expense reports. This development aligns with the sector's pivot from simple text responses to AI agents capable of handling extensive operations, moving beyond what chatbots and image generators currently offer.
