Anthropic hits $3 billion in annualized revenue on business demand for AI - Reuters

San Francisco, CA - Artificial intelligence developer Anthropic has achieved a significant milestone, hitting $3 billion in annualized revenue, according to two sources familiar with the matter. This marks a substantial leap from December 2024, when the metric was nearly $1 billion, and underscores the growing business demand for AI.

The company, backed by Google parent Alphabet and Amazon, has seen a rapid increase in revenue, with the figure crossing $2 billion by the end of March and reaching $3 billion by May. This growth is primarily driven by the sale of AI models as a service to other companies, with code generation being a key driver. Anthropic's expertise in AI-driven computer programming has led to increased adoption of its models in the codegen space, setting it apart among software-as-a-service vendors.

Meritech General Partner Alex Clayton, who is not an Anthropic investor, noted that this growth rate is unprecedented among public software companies. He cautioned that the comparison is not precise due to Anthropic's consumer revenue via subscriptions to its Claude chatbot. However, publicly traded SaaS company Snowflake took six quarters to achieve similar revenue growth.

Anthropic's competitor, OpenAI, is projected to end 2025 with more than $12 billion in total revenue, up from $3.7 billion last year. While OpenAI is shaping up to be a consumer-oriented company, Anthropic is focusing on enterprise solutions. OpenAI's ChatGPT has seen significant consumer adoption, but Anthropic's Claude has lagged behind in this area, with traffic being about 2% of ChatGPT's in April, according to Web analytics firm Similarweb.

Anthropic, founded in 2021 by a team that departed OpenAI over differences in vision, closed a $3.5 billion fundraise earlier this year, valuing the company at $61.4 billion. OpenAI is currently valued at $300 billion.
