Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and xAI granted up to $200 million for AI work from Defense Department

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has awarded significant contracts to four leading AI companies, including Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and xAI, to develop and implement advanced AI capabilities. The contracts, each with a $200 million ceiling, are aimed at accelerating the military's adoption of cutting-edge AI technologies. This move is part of the Pentagon's strategy to integrate commercially available AI solutions into its operations, as announced by the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) [2].

The contracts will enable the DoD to develop agentic AI workflows across various mission areas, enhancing its ability to address critical national security challenges. This initiative reflects the Pentagon's "commercial-first" approach to leveraging AI, allowing other federal agencies to benefit from these partnerships through the General Services Administration (GSA) [2].

OpenAI, a notable player in the AI space, has already made significant strides in this realm, securing a $200 million, 1-year contract with the DoD in June 2025 to develop prototype AI solutions [3]. This deal, one of the largest in the DoD's history, marks OpenAI's first substantial commercial engagement with the department, traditionally dominated by Palantir [1].

Palantir, a major US government contractor, has been facing increased competition from these new entrants. Despite this, Palantir remains a formidable player, having recently become the world's largest pure-play software company after overtaking SAP's market capitalization [1]. In Q1 2025, Palantir closed 139 government deals with total contract values (TCV) exceeding $1 million, while also inking a record $810 million worth of commercial deals, representing a year-over-year growth of 183 percent [1].

The entry of these new AI companies into the government contracting space is likely to intensify competition and drive innovation, potentially challenging Palantir's dominance. However, it remains to be seen how these new partnerships will impact Palantir's current deal closure run-rate.
