Amtech's 120% AI Surge Justified the Hype-$83M Cash Is What Makes It Tradable

AI revenue mix is now the driver, not just the headline
Amtech is no longer relying on AI buzz alone. The quarter showed a real shift in revenue mix: TPS revenue increased nearly 25% year over year, AI-related revenue in the quarter was up by approximately 120%, and that AI mix now accounted for more than 40% of segment revenue. That makes AI less of a side theme and more of a core part of the TPS story.
Backlog and orders give the ramp more visibility
The next question is whether the demand extends beyond one quarter. AmtechASYS-- ended June with a backlog of $28.7 million, up from $22.3 million at the end of March, and orders rose to $28.8 million from $21.1 million in 2Q26. That does not guarantee smooth execution, but it does suggest a more credible installation pipeline than a one-off spike.
Profit quality is improving alongside AI demand
This setup gets more interesting when you move from top-line growth to margin mix. Gross margin climbed to 50%, and management has tied that improvement to product line rationalization and a transition to a semi-fabless manufacturing model. In other words, Amtech is not just selling more into AI; it is keeping more of each dollar.
Parts and services make the AI story stickier
Recurrence matters. TPS parts and services revenue increased approximately 30% year over year and represented 20% of TPS revenue. That does not eliminate execution risk, especially if installations slip, but it does make the business less dependent on a pure capex sprint.
Earnings are starting to show up with demand
Amtech also posted adjusted EBITDA of $3.3 million, while TPS book-to-bill approached 1.4, marking the third consecutive quarter above one. That combination suggests the demand trend is translating into profitability, not just orders.
Panel-level packaging is the next upside leg
AI-related demand reached 35% of TPS revenue, up from 30% last quarter, and management expects that strength to continue through Q3 and Q4. Amtech also has initial orders for panel-level packaging equipment, which management views as a meaningful part of the advanced-packaging upgrade cycle.
The $83 million cash balance is the option, not the thesis
Amtech's $83.1 million in cash-including $56.5 million of net proceeds from June's oversubscribed offering-does not remove execution risk. It does reduce financing risk and gives management more room to fund the AI packaging ramp while the revenue story continues to prove out.

The next one to two quarters are the near-term test
The near-term bar is visible. Q4 revenue guidance is $22.5 million to $24 million, only slightly above the $22.4 million Q3 result, so this is less about a distant narrative and more about steady execution. Bulls can tolerate continued weakness in SFS revenue if TPS keeps carrying the business. Bears will argue that one strong segment does not fully offset cyclical pressure elsewhere.
What would strengthen the setup from here?
The clearest confirmation would be revenue holding near guidance while AI mix remains healthy and the cash balance is being used to support the packaging ramp rather than simply extend the timeline. That is the point where the story moves from sentiment-led demand to a more earnings-driven setup.
