American Public Education, Inc. (APEI), a leading provider of education to military, nursing, and service-minded learners, has appointed James Kenigsberg as its interim Chief Innovation and Technology Officer (CITO). With over two decades of experience in educational technology, Kenigsberg will lead the integration of AI and data across APEI's educational offerings. His appointment comes as the organization accelerates its transition to become a data-first, AI-enabled institution.
APEI serves approximately 88,000 adult learners worldwide via its American Public University System (APUS), Rasmussen University, and Hondros College of Nursing. The new CITO role is pivotal in modernizing the learner journey, improving access, and enhancing student persistence. Kenigsberg will focus on leveraging intelligent infrastructure, predictive analytics, and personalized digital tools to deliver more responsive, mission-aligned educational experiences.
James Kenigsberg brings extensive experience in leading technology strategies in education. He previously served as the founding Chief Technology Officer at 2U, Inc., where he helped scale the company from a startup to a global edtech leader. After stepping away from 2U, Kenigsberg served as a strategic advisor to various high-growth startups and education-focused companies, including APEI. His track record in building scalable, student-focused technology solutions aligns closely with APEI's vision.
Kenigsberg will step away from his role as a member of the APEI Board of Directors to focus on his new executive role. He will lead the integration of AI and data across admissions, academic operations, career pathways, and learner support, aiming to meet the needs of service-minded individuals where they are.
APEI's institutions are accredited by various agencies, including the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), and Accrediting Council for Continuing Education & Training (ACCET). The company's mission is to transform lives, advance careers, and improve communities through accessible and affordable higher education.
