Amazon Inc. has recently confirmed a strategic decision to lay off approximately 100 employees from its Devices & Services division. This division is responsible for the development of products such as the Alexa voice assistant, Kindle e-reader, Echo devices, and Zoox autonomous vehicles. The move underscores Amazon's ongoing efforts to streamline its workforce.
According to
spokesperson Kristy Schmidt, the cuts are part of the company’s regular business evaluations aimed at optimizing team and project efficiencies to align more closely with their product roadmap. Schmidt emphasized the difficulty in making such decisions and reiterated the company's commitment to supporting affected employees during the transition period. However, Amazon has not disclosed further details regarding which teams within the division are impacted. This latest restructuring follows a significant wave of layoffs initiated in 2022 by CEO Andy Jassy, marking the largest reduction in the company's history, with a total of 27,000 positions eliminated. The effort to trim corporate excess has persisted into 2023, with targeted layoffs occurring across various departments, including recent changes to the Alexa team. Additionally, the company has implemented enhancements to Alexa involving generative AI to improve conversational capabilities.
The restructuring occurs amidst ongoing changes in Amazon's workforce composition. As of March 31, the company reported an increase in its total number of employees, reaching 1.56 million full-time and part-time positions—a 3% rise compared to the previous year. A significant portion of Amazon’s workforce consists of hourly logistics employees within its warehouses and distribution networks.
Despite the layoffs, Amazon continues to pursue opportunities to recruit within the Devices & Services division, demonstrating a balanced approach to managing employee headcount while strategically advancing its technological and product objectives.
