Amazon's (AMZN.US) autonomous driving unit Zoox has started testing robotaxis in San Francisco.
Amazon's (AMZN.US) autonomous vehicle unit Zoox has started testing its robotaxis in San Francisco's SoMa neighborhood and expanded its activities to Las Vegas Boulevard and surrounding areas.
Only Zoox employees can ride during the testing phase, which is not open to the public.
San Francisco is the third city where Zoox is testing its autonomous taxi service after Foster City, California, and Las Vegas.
Zoox plans to open its autonomous taxi service to the public through an early passenger program next year. Selected passengers will ride for free and provide feedback.
San Francisco already has autonomous taxis from Alphabet's Waymo and General Motors' Cruise. But Zoox's autonomous taxis are different because they are manufactured without traditional manual controls.
As for its competitors, Waymo recently launched its autonomous taxi service to everyone in Los Angeles.
Cruise's California license is still suspended due to strict regulatory scrutiny, while Tesla plans to launch its own autonomous taxi called Cybercab by 2027.
