Amazon Product Recall: Velazzio Heated Gloves Pose Severe Burn Hazard, Removed from Sale

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced a recall concerning Velazzio Thermo1 Battery Heated Gloves, sold on Amazon, due to them posing a risk of serious injury. The heated gloves, produced by Chinese manufacturer Jining Liexing Outdoor Products Co., Ltd., have been found to overheat during use, leading to severe burn hazards for users. This recall notification follows numerous reports received by the CPSC, with 137 incidents in total, resulting in 119 burn injuries directly linked to the gloves' overheating.

These gloves were marketed with specific features such as a zippered pocket containing a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack, a black carrying case, and a charger. Since their launch back in September 2019, approximately 58,700 units have been distributed through Amazon at prices ranging from $9 to $140. Notably, Amazon has already removed the Velazzio Thermo1 Battery Heated Gloves from its online platform following the recall announcement, underscoring the seriousness of the potential hazards posed by the gloves.

The CPSC advises consumers to cease using the gloves immediately. They are instructed to detach the battery and dispose of it properly following local hazardous waste procedures. Given the increased fire risk related to lithium-ion batteries, specific care must be taken during disposal. Instead of discarding them with general waste or recycling, users should direct these batteries to municipal household hazardous waste collection centers. It is recommended to contact these centers beforehand to ensure acceptance of lithium-powered products.

Despite the gravity of the safety concerns, the manufacturer Jining Liexing Outdoor Products Co., Ltd., has not provided a response or arrangement for the recall, which further complicates the resolution of this hazard. Consumers continue to be urged to prioritize safety and follow the guidelines provided to prevent injuries.

The recall also echoes similar incidents in the market, where heightened risks necessitate similar action. The CPSC had also recalled a popular smartwatch model, the Altafit af28, following 39 customer reports detailing incidents of the watch melting, burning, and catching fire during its charging process.

In addition to advising proper disposal methods for lithium batteries, consumers are reminded to disconnect any related devices from power sources to mitigate fire risks.
