Amazon's (AMZN.US) Zoox has recalled 258 vehicles due to issues with its autonomous driving system.
Amazon (AMZN.US) on Wednesday announced it is recalling 258 of its self-driving vehicles from its Zoox division due to issues with the autonomous driving system. Zoox stated that the vehicles may unexpectedly brake in certain driving scenarios, such as when a motorcyclist approaches the vehicle's rear quickly or a bicyclist enters a nearby crosswalk. The recall affects vehicles equipped with ADS software released prior to November 5, 2022, according to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Zoox has updated the ADS software for free, and all affected self-driving vehicles have been fixed by November 7, 2024. Zoox is preparing to launch its commercial robotaxi service in 2025, with Las Vegas expected to be the first market. The company plans to start offering rides to the public soon and will further expand its operations. Zoox has introduced a new generation of robotaxis with hardware upgrades, including improved suspension, brakes, and electronic drive units. The new generation also enhances user interface and comfort features, such as seats and two-way audio communication.
