Amazon (AMZN.US) may face an EU investigation next year over alleged favoritism of its own brands.
Amazon (AMZN.US) may face an antitrust investigation in Europe next year over whether it favours its own-brand products on its online marketplace, according to reports. The online retail giant could be fined up to 10 per cent of its global annual turnover if it breaches the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
The decision on whether to launch an investigation and when will be made by Teresa Ribera, the new antitrust commissioner, in the coming months, according to sources. She will take over from Margrethe Vestager next month.
The DMA prohibits large tech companies from prioritising their own products and services on their platforms.
In March, the European Commission said it was gathering information about how Amazon handled its own products on its Amazon store.
Amazon said in a statement: “Amazon is compliant with the Digital Markets Act and has been working constructively with the European Commission on our plans since our two services were designated.”
