Amazon (AMZN.US) is planning to invest $11 billion in Georgia to expand its data center presence.
Amazon's (AMZN.US) cloud division AWS announced plans to invest $11bn in Georgia to expand its cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure in the United States.
AWS said: "Generative AI is driving increased demand for advanced cloud infrastructure and compute capacity, and AWS' investment will support the future of AI in Georgia's data centers. AWS data centers are flexible enough to efficiently run traditional workloads or AI and machine learning models on GPUs."
The investments are being made in separate locations in Butts and Douglas counties in the southeast and west of Atlanta, respectively. AWS expects to create 550 high-skilled jobs.
Amazon is understood to have the largest share of the global cloud market at about 31 per cent, but Microsoft (MSFT.US) and Google (GOOGL.US) have been steadily increasing their market share to 20 per cent and 12 per cent respectively over the past few years.
Last year, Amazon said it planned to invest more than $100bn in data centres focused on artificial intelligence over the next few years. AWS has already invested billions of dollars in data centre projects in Virginia, Mississippi, Indiana and Pennsylvania.
