Alstom has secured a EUR2 billion contract for commuter trains in the US. The contract is part of Alstom's efforts to expand its presence in the rail transport sector. The company's products and services include rolling stocks, railway services, signaling and control systems, and railway infrastructure. Alstom's net sales are distributed geographically across France, Europe, the Americas, Asia/Pacific, and Middle East/Africa/Central Asia.

Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has secured a EUR2 billion contract to manufacture 316 commuter rail cars for the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The contract, valued at EUR2.0 billion (USD2.3 billion), includes an option for an additional 242 cars worth up to EUR1.3 billion (USD1.5 billion). The M-9A passenger vehicles will replace the MTA’s oldest commuter cars, the 40-year-old M-3 model, and will offer a quieter, smoother, and more reliable ride. The contract is expected to create nearly 300 jobs across Alstom’s production sites in upstate New York [1].

The new vehicles will feature USB charging ports, space for wheelchairs, and accessible restrooms, as well as two sets of extra-wide doors to facilitate quick boarding and disembarkation. The contract is part of Alstom's broader strategy to expand its presence in the rail transport sector, which includes rolling stocks, railway services, signaling and control systems, and railway infrastructure. The company's net sales are distributed geographically across France, Europe, the Americas, Asia/Pacific, and Middle East/Africa/Central Asia [2].

Alstom will assemble the trains in Hornell, manufacturing the car body shells at the newly opened Plant 4, while the bogies will be assembled at Alstom’s plant in Plattsburgh. The propulsion system will be made by Alstom in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania. Michael Keroullé, President of Alstom Americas, stated, "With the M-9A project, Alstom looks forward to delivering great commuter trains and good jobs for New Yorkers. We are grateful to the MTA for putting their trust in us and building on the long history that Alstom has with the MTA and with manufacturing state-of-the-art trains in America" [1].

The contract is expected to create nearly 300 jobs across Alstom’s production sites in upstate New York, with many positions being filled by members of the International Association of Machinists (IAM) union. Empire State Development President, CEO, and Commissioner Hope Knight highlighted the significance of the contract for regional economic growth, stating, "Advanced manufacturing is a vital Upstate New York industry, and the recent state-of-the-art upgrades at Alstom's Hornell facility were made possible through strategic investments by the company and New York State" [1].

Senator Chuck Schumer praised the contract, noting its potential to inject economic energy into Upstate New York and create good-paying jobs. Senator Kristin Gillibrand emphasized the importance of modernizing public transit to provide efficient and resilient transportation for New Yorkers. Representative Nick Langworthy also celebrated the contract, highlighting the creation of hundreds of union jobs and the modernization of transit [1].

The new rail cars will meet the MTA’s latest cybersecurity standards and will be electric multiple units (EMUs) that do not require a locomotive. Alstom's strong presence in New York state includes manufacturing facilities in Hornell and Plattsburgh, as well as operations and maintenance services for the JFK AirTrain in Queens. The M-9A passenger vehicles are part of Alstom’s Adessia commuter rail portfolio, which includes high-floor multiple units and coaches suitable for various climatic conditions [2].

Alstom's commitment to sustainable operations and passenger experience is evident in its Adessia commuter trains, which are designed to enhance comfort, safety, and reliability. The company's global presence and extensive experience in the rail industry enable it to deliver innovative and sustainable transportation solutions. With over 86,000 employees from 184 nationalities, Alstom focuses its design, innovation, and project management skills on where mobility solutions are needed most [2].
