Alchemy Launches Autonomous Infrastructure Access for AI Agents Using x402 Standard
Alchemy, a blockchain infrastructure provider, has launched a system enabling autonomous AI agents to access data services by purchasing compute credits using USDCUSDC-- and onchain wallets on Base. This development allows agents to operate across multiple chains with minimal human intervention. The system automatically triggers payments via Coinbase's x402 standard when compute credits are exhausted, enabling continuous operation. This shift underscores the growing integration of AI into blockchain workflows, particularly in DeFi and portfolio management.
The x402 standard converts HTTP 402 responses into billing triggers, streamlining machine-to-machine transactions without the need for manual invoicing. By doing so, Alchemy is addressing a key bottleneck in agentic AI development—automated payment processes.
The infrastructure now supports over 100 blockchain networks, enhancing cross-chain interoperability.
Alchemy's system is already being used by major crypto platforms including Robinhood Crypto, UniswapUNI--, OpenSea, AaveAAVE--, and 0x. These integrations suggest a broader trend toward autonomous execution in financial workflows. The move aligns with recent infrastructure developments, such as 0x's Cross-Chain API and Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin, which support machine-to-machine commerce.
Why Did This Happen?
The push for autonomous AI in finance is driven by the need for faster, more efficient data processing and transaction execution. Alchemy's system allows developers to build AI agents capable of managing DeFi portfolios, automating compliance checks, and executing multi-step onchain workflows. This development is part of a larger shift in the banking industry toward agentic systems that reduce operational bottlenecks.
Alchemy's CEO, Nikil Viswanathan, emphasized the platform's focus on enabling autonomous workflows without compromising security or governance. The infrastructure is designed for developers and institutions looking to scale agentic AI in regulated environments. With x402 support, the system also aligns with broader industry efforts to standardize machine-to-machine payments.
How Did the Market Respond?
The broader cryptocurrency market has shown signs of stabilizing, with Bitcoin reclaiming $68,000 and spot ETFs seeing renewed inflows. Bitcoin ETFs, including BlackRock's IBIT, recorded $506.5 million in inflows as of Wednesday, indicating growing institutional interest. EthereumETH-- and XRPXRP-- also stabilized amid improved risk appetite and rising ETF participation.
This market environment may create favorable conditions for infrastructure projects like Alchemy's. As AI agents gain access to automated payment systems, they can more effectively leverage real-time price data and liquidity pools. This is particularly relevant in DeFi and cross-chain trading, where speed and efficiency are critical.
What Are Analysts Watching?
While infrastructure advancements are progressing, adoption of agentic AI in finance remains limited. A recent report from Savant Labs found that while 76% of finance leaders see 2026 as a strategic year for agentic automation, only 30% have active pilots. The main barriers are data governance, ERP integration, and trust in autonomous systems. These concerns are especially pronounced in regulated environments where errors can lead to significant legal and reputational risks.
Additionally, autonomous AI agents pose new challenges for compliance and financial crime prevention. In 2025, illicit crypto activity reached $158 billion, and AI-driven scams surged by 500% year over year. As AI agents gain the ability to move funds across chains rapidly, regulatory frameworks will need to evolve to address new risks around accountability and oversight. Policymakers are already considering how to adapt existing controls to AI-driven transactional actors.
In the broader payment ecosystem, AEON's 2025 data highlights the growth of AI-native and Web3-based payment solutions. With 5.7 million transactions and $263 million in volume processed via AI Pay, the infrastructure is maturing to support continuous value exchange between autonomous systems. These trends suggest that the agentic economy is gaining momentum, but adoption will depend on resolving governance, regulatory, and trust concerns.
