Alberta will be the only province in Canada where most residents will have to pay $100 out of pocket for a COVID-19 vaccine. The rollout will be in two phases, with phase one starting Oct. 1 for eligible individuals and phase two starting Oct. 20. Health care workers, immunocompromised individuals, seniors in care homes, and people on income support will continue to receive free shots. The government has faced opposition from health care experts and advocates, unions, and the Opposition New Democratic Party.

Alberta is set to become the only province in Canada where most residents will have to pay $100 out of pocket for a COVID-19 vaccine. This policy, announced by the provincial government, will be implemented in two phases. Phase one will start on October 1 for eligible individuals, followed by phase two on October 20. Health care workers, immunocompromised individuals, seniors in care homes, and people on income support will continue to receive free shots, as announced by the government [1].

The new policy has sparked controversy and opposition from health care experts, advocates, unions, and the Opposition New Democratic Party (NDP). Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) President Mike Parker expressed disappointment that the government's promise to cover vaccines for health workers was not included in the collective agreement [1]. The United Nurses of Alberta (UNA) also criticized the policy, stating that it puts health-care workers at risk and is "unrealistic" [1].

The government's aim is to prevent wastage of vaccines, following the expenditure of $135 million on unused doses. However, critics argue that the policy creates barriers to vaccination, potentially leading to higher health-care system costs and increased complications [1]. The province has ordered 485,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine for the fall, about 250,000 fewer than last year [1].

In contrast, Pfizer Canada and BioNTech have received Health Canada approval for their updated COVID-19 vaccine targeting the Omicron LP.8.1 variant. The vaccine is authorized for individuals aged 6 months and older and will be available in pharmacies across the country in the fall. Those who meet the public program's eligibility criteria will receive the vaccine for free, while private insurers are working to streamline reimbursement processes for those who do not meet the public program requirements [2].

The government has not yet finalized how much other Albertans will need to pay for the vaccine, but the estimated cost to buy each shot is $110. The province has also not released the specifics of the qualifying health conditions for a free shot [1]. The Opposition NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi called on the government to provide free vaccines to all seniors, criticizing the current policy as "incompetent and confusing" [1].
