Why the 30% figure matters
Ajinomoto has confirmed it will initiate a process to raise prices after shareholders urged the company to increase ABF prices by more than 30%. That stands out because ABF is only about 0.5% of a high-end chip's total cost. When such a small cost component can affect schedules and pricing, it suggests advanced packaging is becoming a tighter constraint in the AI supply chain.
Buyers cannot switch film quickly because qualification takes time, and AI packaging now uses more ABF layers than before. That makes available tonnage more valuable than the broader AI narrative.
The main debate is not whether AI demand exists. It is whether one customer-by-customer price process is enough to create a broader cost shock across packaging.

Why Ajinomoto has so much pricing power
Ajinomoto controls over 95% market share in ABF, while SEKISUI accounts for only about 5%. That leaves very few alternatives for customers that need volume immediately. In a market structured this way, the supplier with available supply has a strong position.
Qualification friction keeps customers locked in
ABF is not an easy material to replace. Once it is qualified, customers face a long validation cycle before switching suppliers. Combined with tight supply, that gives Ajinomoto more leverage than its raw material cost would suggest.
The company is also implementing increases on a case-by-case, client-by-client basis, rather than announcing a single blanket hike. That approach fits a market where availability, not price transparency, is the main constraint.
Why the pressure matters for Ajinomoto
Ajinomoto's electronic materials business generates 30% of the group's profits on just 6% of revenue. That means ABF is a high-value part of the group, even if it is not the largest revenue contributor. In a tighter market,Ajinomoto does not need dramatic volume growth to improve earnings from the business.
Where the supply-chain pressure likely lands first
The more useful question is not whether AI demand is real. It is where margins get pressed first and where scarcity value shows up next.
Most exposed: integrated server, ODM, and system-level packaging steps
Downside pressure is most likely to show up first in server platforms, ODM assemblies, and system-level packaging steps that may not be able to fully pass through higher costs. ABF may be a small part of the bill of materials, but if it constrains delivery schedules, the impact can still spread through the rest of the package.
Closer to the choke point: supply and secured access
Upside is more likely to accrue closer to the bottleneck itself. Ajinomoto's new Gifu site will cost about JPY 1.2 billion for land acquisition, with construction scheduled to begin in 2028 and operations planned for 2032. That is not a near-term relief valve. It signals demand expected to outstrip current capacity for years.
That points most directly to:
- ABF producers and anyone with secured film access
- Substrate makers with reliable supply contracts
- Test-and-packaging capacity that can convert material into finished throughput faster than buyers can re-queue
What would weaken the thesis
Watch for two things:
- New ABF capacity arriving sooner than the current buildout suggests
- Faster qualification of alternatives or broader supply-chain relief
If either happens, the current scarcity premium could fade.
