The bear case is straightforward. The standard development model often delivers short-term construction jobs and revenue, but little durable local upside. A town can see a busy build phase and then find that long-term benefits are smaller than expected if most specialized roles are filled externally or if local linkages remain weak.
That does not mean data centers are automatically bad deals for communities. It means the structure of the deal matters. Regions competing for mega-sites may have more leverage to tie grid access and permits to local workforce development, supplier participation, and other co-investments.

When power, cooling, security systems, and certified technicians are tight, the businesses with real inventory, maintenance contracts, and staffing capacity are best placed to keep more of the cash flow.
Judge projects by what the host town keeps
Not every campus deserves the same outlook. Competition for mega-sites can create leverage for negotiated data center co-investments that support local talent and suppliers. At the same time, weaker sites are places where communities still lack clear rules on long-term electricity, land use, and other local impacts.
