PayPal (PYPL) has announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI to integrate its payment infrastructure into ChatGPT, enabling users to conduct transactions directly within the AI chatbot. The collaboration, unveiled on October 28, 2025, leverages the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)-a framework co-developed by OpenAI and Stripe-to create a seamless "chat-to-checkout" experience. Under the agreement,
will power instant checkout for ChatGPT users via its wallet, funding options, and dispute resolution services, while also connecting its global merchant network to OpenAI's platform . This move positions PayPal as a key player in OpenAI's expanding vision for AI-driven commerce, where consumers can discover and purchase products through conversational interfaces. The partnership aims to make PayPal's tens of millions of merchant catalogs discoverable and purchasable in ChatGPT starting in 2026, spanning categories like apparel, electronics, and home improvement
. PayPal will manage backend operations, including merchant routing, payment validation, and fraud controls, reducing the technical burden on sellers. By centralizing these functions through its ACP server, PayPal eliminates the need for individual merchants to build custom integrations, streamlining the onboarding process, according to an FXNewsGroup report . The company also plans to scale OpenAI's enterprise AI tools-such as ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex-for its 24,000+ employees, enhancing internal workflows and product development, the StockTitan report added.
The collaboration has already driven significant market reaction. PayPal's shares surged 14% in premarket trading following the announcement, reflecting investor optimism about the integration of AI into e-commerce
. Alex Chriss, PayPal's CEO, emphasized the synergy between ChatGPT's 700 million weekly users and PayPal's 400 million shoppers, stating the partnership would "help people go from chat to checkout in just a few taps," according to Seeking Alpha. OpenAI's Instant Checkout feature, launched in September 2025, allows users to confirm orders and complete payments without leaving the ChatGPT interface, a capability now bolstered by PayPal's infrastructure as described in a TechCrunch article .The initiative aligns with broader trends in AI-powered commerce. PayPal's recent partnerships with Perplexity, Google, and Shopify underscore its strategy to dominate AI-driven payment ecosystems, as TechCrunch reported. Meanwhile, OpenAI is expanding its merchant network, having previously integrated Shopify and Etsy into ChatGPT. The ACP, designed as an open standard, enables AI agents and businesses to manage purchases seamlessly, with PayPal's role focusing on risk mitigation and compliance, the StockTitan report noted.
Key risks include the technical complexity of scaling ACP adoption and ensuring robust fraud controls for transactions originating from a conversational interface, the StockTitan report warned. PayPal will monitor merchant enrollment rates, catalog synchronization accuracy, and post-purchase dispute resolution efficiency in the first quarters of 2026 to gauge commercial traction, the StockTitan coverage added.
