For investors, understanding these dynamics is key to assessing the long-term viability of AI in medtech and healthcare startups.
The most alarming risk of AI overreliance is deskilling, where clinicians lose proficiency in core tasks due to automation. A 2025 Lancet study found that endoscopists using AI-assisted colonoscopy tools experienced a 22% drop in unassisted adenoma detection rates after three months of AI use [1]. This decline underscores a broader trend: repeated delegation of tasks to AI can erode diagnostic reasoning, procedural skills, and clinical judgment [2]. AI’s promise in healthcare is undeniable, but its risks—deskilling, regulatory friction, and automation bias—demand careful navigation. For investors, the path forward lies in supporting startups that balance innovation with human-centric design. By prioritizing clinical validation, regulatory compliance, and hybrid models, investors can harness AI’s potential while safeguarding the irreplaceable value of human expertise.
