S. Africa diesel wholesale price to fall as much as 57c/liter

The diesel wholesale price in South Africa is set to experience a significant reduction in September, providing much-needed relief for the transport and agriculture industries. According to the Central Energy Fund (CEF) data, diesel prices are expected to decrease by around 55 cents per liter, with the potential for a slight under-recovery in the 95 Unleaded petrol price [1].

The diesel price decrease will help mitigate the impact of recent fuel price increases on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which rose to 3.5% in July from 3.0% in June. The diesel price increases in July and June contributed to this uptick, with diesel prices rising by 63 to 65 cents and 84 cents, respectively [2].

The predicted diesel price reduction comes as a result of movements in international petroleum and diesel prices, as well as a marginally stronger rand. While international petrol prices have been relatively stable, diesel prices have fallen due to rising inventories [1]. This price decrease will bring the diesel wholesale price back in line with its January level, where it currently costs 60 cents more per liter [2].

The diesel price decrease is expected to ease the financial burden on consumers, as seen in the recent DebtBusters Debt Index for the second quarter. The index reported that 95% of individuals seeking debt counselling had taken out personal loans, and more than half relied on one-month payday loans. Additionally, electricity tariffs and municipal rates have been escalating annually, compounding the financial strain on households [2].

The official fuel price adjustments will be announced by the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources early next week, with the diesel price decrease set to take effect from September 3.
