A commercial vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile 17 nautical miles northwest of the United Arab Emirates’ Mina Saqr in Ras Al Khaimah, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations. The incident, reported on Sunday, resulted in a fire that was subsequently extinguished, with the vessel continuing its voyage. No casualties were reported. Separately, UKMTO noted another incident 7 nautical miles east of Fujairah, UAE, where a projectile damaged a vessel’s steel plating but caused no fire or water ingress.

These events add to a series of recent attacks in the region, including a projectile strike on a Malta-flagged container ship near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have asserted control over the strait, warning of risks to passing vessels amid escalating tensions. The Strait facilitates approximately 20% of global seaborne oil trade, raising concerns about potential disruptions to energy markets.

While the origin of the projectiles remains unconfirmed, the incidents highlight growing volatility in the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea, areas traditionally considered safer for shipping. Analysts note that prolonged instability could drive up insurance costs for maritime trade, impact oil prices, and complicate global supply chains. UKMTO and private security agencies continue to monitor the situation, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance in the region.

As of March 10, 2026, no further attacks have been reported, but the clustering of incidents underscores the geopolitical risks facing investors in energy and maritime sectors.
