Global advertising giant WPP (WPP.US) announced on Tuesday that it had appointed Philip Jansen, the former CEO of British Telecom, as its new chairman, replacing Roberto Quarta.

Jansen will join the WPP board in September and will take over from Quarta on 1 January 2022.

The appointment comes as WPP, which owns advertising companies such as Ogilvy and GroupM, trails its global peers. The group’s first-quarter organic revenue fell as a result of a decline in spending by technology clients and the loss of business to Publicis (PFE.US).

“(Quarta) helped the company navigate through significant challenges including the Covid pandemic, oversaw the restructuring of our investment portfolio to restore WPP’s financial stability and guided the fundamental reinvention of our products to meet the needs of modern marketing,” said Mark Read, WPP’s chief executive.

Jansen left British Telecom earlier this year.
