Adobe Unveils Firefly: A New AI Rival in the Text-to-Video Arena
At the Adobe MAX annual conference, the American software giant Adobe announced it has initiated public testing of a text-to-video AI model, Firefly, positioning itself against strong competitors like OpenAI and Meta. This move marks Adobe's inclusion in the burgeoning market of companies employing generative AI to revolutionize film and video production, with its stock seeing a significant rise of over 3% during US trading hours.
The Firefly video model, heralded as a technological breakthrough by Adobe, aims to compete with OpenAI's earlier released Sora model. Other industry players, such as TikTok parent ByteDance and Meta, have also recently introduced similar video-generating tools. Adobe's strategy involves developing models trained on legally claimable data, ensuring commercially viable outputs.
Initially launched in March 2023 for image generation, Firefly has since expanded into Adobe's tool suite, including Photoshop, Express, and Illustrator. The video model seeks to extend Adobe's generative AI offerings and is currently available on a limited basis for professional feedback, with plans to refine its capabilities based on this input.
Based in San Jose, Adobe is gradually making this AI video technology accessible to users on the waitlist, although specific timelines remain undisclosed. Despite not announcing any major client engagements for the video tools, Adobe disclosed leveraging Firefly's image model by brands like Gatorade for customizing product labels.
Addressing copyright and safety concerns, Adobe has imposed limitations on video content involving minors or public figures, tagging such creations to indicate AI involvement. The company's Chief Technology Officer, Ely Greenfield, emphasized that Adobe's tools focus on integration with daily video editing activities, prioritizing seamless mixing with traditional content.
Greenfield highlighted the meticulous control in Adobe's models, teaching the AI to recognize professional video editing concepts such as camera angles and movements. This is pivotal for users desiring AI capabilities built directly into familiar applications they already utilize.
