Adani Power Limited, an Indian private-sector thermal power producer, has completed the acquisition of Vidarbha Industries Power. The company operates and develops power projects with a total capacity of approximately 16.85 GW. Its power plants are located in various states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh. Adani Power sells power generated from its projects under various agreements, including long-term power purchase agreements and short-term PPAs.
Adani Power Limited (APL), India's largest private-sector thermal power producer, has completed the acquisition of Vidarbha Industries Power Limited (VIPL) for ₹4,000 crore [1]. This strategic move not only expands APL's operational capacity but also strengthens its long-term ambition to lead India's base load power generation space.VIPL, a 2×300 MW coal-based power plant located in Butibori, Nagpur (Maharashtra), was undergoing insolvency proceedings under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). After receiving the go-ahead from the Mumbai Bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) on June 18, Adani Power swiftly wrapped up the implementation of its resolution plan by July 7, 2025 [1].
With this acquisition, APL's total installed capacity has now risen to 18,150 MW. The company is currently developing six massive brownfield ultra-supercritical thermal power projects (each with a capacity of 1,600 MW) at existing locations in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan. Additionally, a new 1,600 MW greenfield plant is under construction in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. The company is also reviving work on a previously acquired 1,320 MW plant in Korba [1].
If all goes as planned, APL’s operational power generation capacity is expected to reach an impressive 30,670 MW by 2030, further consolidating its lead in India’s energy landscape [1].
