Mumbai, India - The Maharashtra state government has approved a significant redevelopment plan for Dharavi, one of Asia's largest slums, with a focus on creating a multi-modal transit hub as part of the broader project. The Adani Group, through its subsidiary Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt. Ltd. (NMDPL), has outlined ambitious plans to transform the area, which includes the construction of a transportation network featuring airport trains, check-in facilities, and various public transit options.
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) aims to reshape Dharavi into a modern, well-connected urban space by 2032. The project, valued at Rs 95,790 crore, will cover 251.24 hectares, with 541.2 acres designated for affordable rental homes. The redevelopment is being led by NMDPL, a special purpose vehicle formed through a joint venture between the Maharashtra government’s Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) and the Adani Group’s Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Limited (DRPPL).
A key component of the redevelopment plan is the Multi Modal Transport Hub (MMTH), which will be managed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA). This hub will integrate various modes of transportation, including airport trains, inter- and intra-city rail, metro services, and city buses. The first level of the MMTH will provide links to Mahim and Sion, while the second level will connect to Metro Lines 8 and 11, enhancing connectivity within the city.
The project also includes the development of a riverfront promenade along the Mithi River north of Dharavi, healthcare and hospital networks, green spaces, industrial zones, and community recreational areas. These enhancements aim to improve the overall quality of life for the residents of Dharavi.
The Adani Group holds an 80% stake in NMDPL, with the state government holding the remaining 20%. The project has received significant attention and approval from the Maharashtra state government, which sees it as a critical step towards modernizing and improving the living conditions in Dharavi.
The redevelopment project is expected to take seven years to complete, with construction work already underway since January 2025. The project's success will not only transform Dharavi but also have a positive impact on the broader Mumbai urban landscape.
