In a significant move towards promoting electric vehicle (EV) adoption, the Abu Dhabi Mobility, a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport, has announced a substantial investment in EV charging infrastructure. The initiative involves the construction of 1,000 new charging stations across 400 strategic locations, including hotels and shopping centers, in Abu Dhabi Island,
Ain, and Al Dhafra regions. The project, which will be operated under the unified brand "Charge AD," aims to provide a seamless charging experience for EV owners. The charging rates have been set at 0.70 dirhams per kilowatt-hour for alternating current (AC) and 1.20 dirhams per kilowatt-hour for direct current (DC). The initiative is part of a broader strategy to achieve a net-zero emissions target by 2050, with the current phase being the first step in a long-term plan to expand charging infrastructure in line with market demand.
Abdulla Hamed Al Ghfeli, Acting Director General of the Integrated Transport Center in Abu Dhabi, emphasized the importance of a unified and extensive EV charging network in promoting EV adoption and building smarter, more sustainable communities. This move is expected to support Abu Dhabi's vision of reducing emissions and enhancing efficiency in the future.
In the first quarter of 2025, the number of registered electric vehicles in Abu Dhabi surpassed 15,000, marking a 60% increase from the previous year. The region has been proactive in its EV policies, with a clear roadmap set in 2022 to achieve 50% EV penetration by 2040. This comprehensive policy covers the entire EV value chain, including vehicle procurement, power supply, pricing mechanisms, and charging infrastructure.
This strategic investment in EV charging infrastructure is a critical component of the UAE's broader efforts to transition towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation. By expanding the charging network, Abu Dhabi aims to encourage more residents and businesses to adopt electric vehicles, thereby reducing the region's carbon footprint and contributing to global efforts against climate change.
