After 2 scrubs, SpaceX tries for Saturday morning launch for competitor Amazon

SpaceX is set to attempt its third launch for Amazon's Project Kuiper on Saturday morning, following two scrubbed attempts earlier in the week. The launch window opens at 9:18 a.m. ET from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station’s Space Launch Complex 40, with a 27-minute duration [1].

The mission, which carries 24 more of Amazon's broadband internet satellites, comes just over three weeks since SpaceX flew the first of what is so far only three contracted flights for Amazon. SpaceX's first-stage booster for this mission is making its first flight and will attempt a recovery landing downrange on the droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas stationed in the Atlantic [1].

The launch is significant as it marks SpaceX's contribution to Amazon's ambitious goal of deploying a 3,236-satellite constellation to provide global internet access. Amazon's majority of missions were initially contracted out to United Launch Alliance (ULA), but recent delays in ULA's new Vulcan Centaur, Blue Origin's New Glenn, and Arianespace's Ariane 6 rockets have forced Amazon to seek additional launch help from SpaceX [1].

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has set a July 2026 deadline for Amazon to have half of its satellites in orbit. SpaceX's latest launch, along with the 27 satellites from each Atlas V launch and the 24 from the Falcon 9 launches, will bring the total number of operational satellites in space to 102. However, to reach the halfway threshold of 1,618 satellites by mid-2026, Amazon would need another 1,330 satellites flown from either Vulcan or other providers [1].

The global LEO satellite market is expected to reach USD 20.69 billion by 2030, driven by increasing launches for commercial, government, and defense applications. The commercial segment, led by players like SpaceX and Amazon, is projected to dominate by 2025, expanding global internet access [2].
