Dow Drops More Than 300 Points as $100 Oil Overshadows AppleAAPL-- Event

U.S. stocks fell shortly after Wednesday's opening bell as Brent crude surged above $100 a barrel, reviving inflation and interest-rate concerns on a day when Apple's biggest iPhone event in years was set to dominate the corporate calendar. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 334 points, or 0.63%, to 52,451; the S&P 500 declined 22.59 points, or 0.29%, to 7,650.93; and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 107.81 points, or 0.41%, to 26,313.60.

Once again, the rising price of oil appears to be the source of mounting pressure on equities. Brent climbed $2.77, or 2.83%, to $100.69 a barrel, while WTI advanced $2.67, or 2.87%, to $95.70. Brent crossed $100 for the first time in roughly two months after more violent exchanges between the U.S. and Iran heightened concerns about supplies moving through the Persian Gulf.

Reuters reported that flows through the Strait of Hormuz have fallen from roughly 9 million barrels a day before the latest disruptions to below 2 million barrels. The resulting energy shock is feeding concerns that inflation could remain stubborn and keep monetary policy tighter for longer. The 10-year Treasury yield was around 4.8% Wednesday morning.

Bonds represent the day's third major variable. Investors are awaiting details of Treasury's expanded purchases of longer-dated securities after the department previously indicated it would increase buybacks.

Against that difficult macro backdrop, Apple's “Surprise and shine” event is Wall Street's major company specific catalyst Wednesday. You can read AInvest's Apple Event Preview.

Investors expect Apple's first foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. The foldable is expected to feature a roughly 7.8-inch inner display, creating Apple's first fundamentally new iPhone form factor since the iPhone X nearly a decade ago.

But investors may care even more about price than design. KeyBanc estimates starting prices of $1,249 for the iPhone 18 Pro, $1,399 for the Pro Max and $2,199 for the foldable, while Morgan Stanley's foldable base case is $2,399. KeyBanc projects roughly 80 million iPhone 18 builds across two quarters, versus about 91 million a year earlier. The investment case therefore rests partly on whether higher average selling prices can compensate for lower unit volumes.

The broader cross asset picture showed rising caution rather than panic. Gold gained $22.80, or 0.51%, to $4,461.80, while the VIX rose 0.45 point, or 2.86%, to 16.17.

That leaves Wednesday's market caught between three unusually powerful forces: a $100 oil shock threatening inflation, an Apple launch testing consumers' willingness to pay substantially more for premium hardware, and Treasury's attempt to ease pressure at the long end of the bond market. With producer-price data Thursday and CPI Friday, the oil move raises the stakes for both the bond market and the Federal Reserve.
