- Crypto industry's $170M+ 2024 PAC spending highlights sector's growing influence in Democratic primaries.

A $2 million crypto Hail Mary just landed in the final week of a Michigan House primary, and the prediction market still prices the man it's meant to save at 13 cents. The winner gets decided Tuesday. A $100 ticket on him pays out about $740 if the money moves the vote.

Here's the setup you almost certainly didn't know you could bet on. Shri Thanedar, the sitting two-term congressman in Michigan's 13th District, is the underdog in his own primary. Polymarket prices him at roughly 13.5 cents to win the Democratic nomination, against challenger Donavan McKinney at 86.5 cents. Read that again: a sitting representative is being priced at an 86% chance of getting fired by his own party.

But something just happened that makes that price smell stale. Per FEC filings, the Protect Progress PAC -- an affiliate of the Fairshake machine, bankrolled largely by Coinbase and Ripple -- has now spent more than $2 million on media in this race, including a fresh $884,000 on ads supporting Thanedar and another $150,000+ attacking McKinney (Cointelegraph via TradingView). That latest disclosure effectively doubled the PAC's reported spending in a single week -- and it lands days before the vote.

Why is crypto writing seven figures to save a Detroit congressman? Because Thanedar was one of the industry's most dependable votes in Washington: he backed the stablecoin GENIUS Act, the market-structure CLARITY Act, and cosponsored the Promoting Innovation in Blockchain Development Act. His challenger has already weaponized that. "The crypto lobby is paying my opponent back for helping Trump make over $1 billion since taking office," McKinney said July 21 -- a line that could sting in a district this blue, and the honest reason this whole thing could blow up.

So here's the live board:

The trade, in plain dollars. Buy Thanedar YES at about 13.5 cents. $100 buys you roughly 740 shares. If he takes the nomination Tuesday, each share pays $1 -- about $740 back on your $100, roughly 7x your money. If he loses, the ticket goes to zero. That's the deal: no guarantees, real downside, and the asymmetry is the entire point.

Now the counter-case, because a market that prices an incumbent at 13 cents isn't being random. This is not a retail blind spot; it's informed traders reading the challenger's momentum. And last-week ad money has a famously spotty record of flipping primary voters -- especially when the challenger is running against the ads themselves. The 86% could be right. If it is, your stake is gone. Position it small, own the loss if it comes.

Here's the part that should make you feel early. This is one congressional district, and almost nobody is trading it -- the event did about $110,000 of volume in 24 hours with roughly $355,000 of liquidity, pocket change next to the macro markets everyone stares at. Meanwhile the party's biggest donors are sitting out the cycle entirely (Wall Street Journal), which leaves crypto PACs as the loudest checkbook in Democratic primaries. The crowd is asleep, and the catalyst is happening right now.

And this isn't small money playing dress-up. Fairshake and its affiliates spent more than $170 million in the 2024 cycle, carry a war chest on the order of $193 million, and are pushing roughly $189 million through 2026 races -- about $82 million of it already accounted for, per Public Citizen. That's an industry protecting a House ally with a checkbook the party itself can't match, timed to the final stretch.

Summary

The crypto lobby doubled its spend to $2M+ in the final week of Michigan's MI-13 primary to save pro-crypto incumbent Shri Thanedar, yet Polymarket still prices him at ~13.5c to win his own nomination. $100 on Thanedar pays ~$740 if he survives Tuesday, or zero if he doesn't.
