$100 to $25,000: Hungary's Post-Orban Presidency Is Being Priced on Polymarket -- and Nobody's Watching
Hungary is mid-transition, the vote is Tuesday, and while the board prices the favorite at 99.5 cents, the underdog lane is still paying 250-to-1 -- with ~$189,000 of liquidity behind it and the English-speaking world staring at the US Open. A $100 ticket on the name nobody's crowning yet could cash for roughly $25,000 before your feed even learns the election happened. This is one of those windows. Here's the clock.
On Saturday, Hungary's ruling Tisza party nominated Andras Baka -- a 73-year-old former head of the Supreme Court and two-term judge at the European Court of Human Rights -- to be the country's next president, Reuters reported. Baka is expected to be elected Tuesday, a step US News calls a "symbolic step in Prime Minister Peter Magyar's attempt to dismantle former premier Viktor Orban's bastions of power."
This isn't a routine succession. Former President Tamas Sulyok's mandate ended at midnight on July 20 under the 17th amendment to Hungary's Fundamental Law, and parliament has just 30 days to elect a successor under that same law. The new ruling party proposed an extraordinary session Aug 10-11 with the vote set for Aug 11, Xinhua reports. Speaker Agnes Forsthoffer is acting president in the meantime. So in the next 72 hours, Hungary chooses its first head of state of the post-Orban era.
The market already knows -- or thinks it does
Polymarket launched this event on July 28, and it has already drawn ~$189,000 of liquidity and ~$47,800 in 24-hour volume. It resolves to whoever is officially sworn in as President of Hungary by Dec 31 -- interim or caretaker presidents do not count, so the acting president is properly priced near zero.
The favorite is a near-foregone conclusion: Andras Baka YES at 99.5 cents, backed by ~$15,700 in depth, on a man the prime minister calls "one of Hungary's most respected experts on European law and constitutional affairs."

The trade that pays 250-to-1
The treasure is in the gap between "the market has decided" and "Tuesday hasn't happened yet." The rest of the board is still live, still liquid, and still absurdly cheap:
- Adrienn Laczo is trading near 0.4 cents. $100 buys about 25,000 shares. If she is the name sworn in this week, that is roughly $25,000 back -- about a $24,900 profit on a hundred bucks. Approximately 250-to-1.
- Peter Barandy sits near 0.2 cents. $100 buys roughly 50,000 shares. About $50,000 if it lands. Approximately 500-to-1.
And then the honest part, in the same breath: Baka is 99.5 cents for a reason. The ruling party has the votes. If he is elected Tuesday -- the expected outcome -- every longshot goes to zero and that $100 is gone. This is a lottery ticket on the most under-covered political transition in Europe, not a sure thing. That is the whole deal.
Why this is still sitting here
Because the whole world is looking somewhere else. Fed headlines, BTC screenshots, the US Open, the midterm polls -- every eyeball that drives these markets is on those boards. Meanwhile a genuine regime change -- the dismantling of Orban's system of power -- is resolving in a market that traded roughly $48,000 yesterday. The crowd outside Hungary does not know the election is happening. The board does, and it has been pricing it since July 28.
Three days. The vote is Tuesday. When Baka is sworn in -- or whoever it is -- this market resolves and the 250-to-1 tickets are gone forever. You are early by definition: the window closes this week.
The cheapest way to own a regime change this year is a 0.4-cent ticket on a name the market has not decided to kill yet. Hungary picks its new president on Tuesday. The only place the underdog still pays 250-to-1 is Polymarket -- and Tuesday is three days away.
Summary
Hungary's post-Orban transition hits its first big moment Tuesday, when parliament elects a new president. Polymarket prices Baka at 99.5 cents, but the longshot lane -- Laczo near 0.4c, Barandy near 0.2c -- is still paying roughly 250x to 500x with ~$189,000 of liquidity. The market resolves once the new president is sworn in. $100 on Laczo at 0.4c could return ~$25,000; $100 on the underdog that loses returns zero. Your call, before Tuesday.
