Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister: We believe our response to the US proposal will be "reasonable."

Tehran, June 9, 2025 — Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that Iran will soon submit its own nuclear proposal to the United States. This move comes after five rounds of talks between Iran and Washington, aimed at replacing the 2015 nuclear accord abandoned by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

The latest round of talks, held in late May, saw Iran receive "elements" of a U.S. proposal, which Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described as containing "ambiguities." The U.S. offer, according to Araghchi, failed to include the lifting of sanctions, a key demand for Tehran. Iran has been under significant economic strain due to these sanctions.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei criticized the U.S. proposal as "lacking elements" reflective of previous rounds of negotiations. He emphasized that Iran's response will be "reasonable, logical, and balanced," and will be delivered through mediator Oman once finalized [2].

The U.S. proposal, deemed "unacceptable" by Iran, has been described as not addressing key issues such as uranium enrichment on Iranian soil and the shipment abroad of Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium [3]. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei dismissed the U.S. offer as against Iran's interests, pledging to continue enrichment activities [2].

The upcoming proposal from Iran is expected to maintain domestic uranium enrichment while addressing U.S. concerns in exchange for effective sanctions relief. The response is also expected to signal Iran's readiness to engage in further indirect talks with the U.S., provided its red lines are respected [3].

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is set to convene a Board of Governors meeting from June 9-13 in Vienna to discuss Iran's nuclear activities. The meeting follows an IAEA report criticizing "less than satisfactory" cooperation from Tehran, particularly in explaining past cases of nuclear material found at undeclared sites [1].

Iran has criticized the IAEA report as unbalanced, claiming it relied on "forged documents" provided by Israel. The U.S. and its European allies are currently weighing whether to trigger the sanctions "snapback" mechanism in the accord, which would reinstate UN sanctions on Iran [1].

The sixth round of nuclear talks between Iran and the U.S. remains uncertain, with no specific date set yet. The diplomatic standoff over Iran's uranium enrichment continues, with Tehran defending it as a "non-negotiable" right and Washington describing it as a "red line" [1].
