Fraser: aim to pull forward investments set out at investor day
West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. (TSX and NYSE: WFG) has outlined plans to accelerate investments previously announced at its investor day, as part of its strategy to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen long-term competitiveness. The company’s first-quarter 2026 results highlight a challenging operating environment, with earnings of $(188) million and Adjusted EBITDA of $(66) million, largely impacted by a $114 million charge for duty adjustments related to prior periods. Despite these headwinds, the company reported positive Adjusted EBITDA in segments in North America and Europe Engineered Wood Products.
Sean McLaren, President and CEO, emphasized the importance of operational resilience and cost discipline in navigating macroeconomic uncertainties, including rising mortgage rates and housing affordability challenges. The company has completed the wind-down of its High Level, Alberta OSB mill and restored operations at Blue Ridge lumber mill following a January fire. These actions reflect West Fraser’s commitment to aligning production with customer demand and maintaining operational flexibility.
Capital expenditures in the first quarter totaled $94 million, with the company maintaining its 2026 guidance for capital spending $300-$350 million. West Fraser also reaffirmed its shipment targets for lumber and engineered wood products, citing ongoing demand from repair and renovation activity and long-term growth potential in mass timber applications.
The company’s liquidity position remains stable, with $81 million in cash and short-term investments as of April 3, 2026, although credit facility borrowings increased to $203 million. West Fraser continues to prioritize disciplined capital allocation, with a focus on strengthening its balance sheet and supporting long-term value creation for stakeholders.
