Ashland is said to explore sale after getting takeover interest
Ashland Inc., a specialty chemicals manufacturer, is reportedly considering a sale after receiving renewed pressure from activist investors to initiate a strategic review. Cruiser Capital Advisors, a prominent activist firm, has urged the company’s board to launch a formal process to explore strategic alternatives, including a potential acquisition. In a letter to directors, Cruiser Capital argued that Ashland’s current structure limits its ability to maximize shareholder value and that a sale could unlock significant cost synergies, potentially exceeding $100 million.
This call follows a similar push from Ancora Alternatives, another activist investor, which has also advocated for a sale and projected a potential 30% increase in Ashland’s share price. Ancora has taken a significant stake in the company and has indicated it is prepared to escalate its campaign through a proxy contest if no progress is made by September. The firm highlighted that Ashland’s stock is trading at a discount relative to its historical valuation and intrinsic value.
Ashland’s shares have shown some recovery in 2026, rising nearly 10% year-to-date, following a decline of 18% in 2025. The company has not yet confirmed a sale process but has stated it regularly evaluates strategic opportunities to enhance long-term value. With multiple activist investors now involved, the pressure on Ashland’s board to act is intensifying.
