Portland General to seek 4.8% overall rate increase

Portland General Electric (PGE) has filed a proposal with the Oregon Public Utility Commission (OPUC) to implement a 4.8% overall rate increase for its customers. This request follows a recent approval of a new rate structure for large-load data centers, which saw a 29.7% increase, while residential and small business customers experienced rate reductions. The proposed increase aims to cover the costs associated with maintaining and upgrading infrastructure, including transmission towers, battery storage systems, and expansion of underground power lines to enhance grid reliability and safety.

PGE has emphasized its commitment to balancing affordability with the need for modernization, citing investments in smart technology, weather monitoring systems, and Clearwater Wind Energy Center. The utility also highlighted its efforts to reduce outages and improve service restoration times through early fault detection systems and grid enhancements.

The rate case will undergo a public review process, during which the OPUC will evaluate PGE’s proposal and consider input from stakeholders before making a final decision. PGE has stated that customer rates will not change until the commission approves the adjustments.
