Novonix delivers mass production AAM sample to Panasonic
Novonix Limited (ASX: NVX) has delivered a mass production qualification C-sample of synthetic graphite anode active material (AAM) to Panasonic Energy, marking a significant step in its battery-grade qualification process. The sample was produced at Novonix’s Riverside facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which is central to the company’s strategy to establish North American production of high-performance synthetic graphite for lithium-ion batteries.
The delivery represents the first known C-sample of synthetic graphite AAM produced in North America and is considered a late-stage milestone in the qualification process. Novonix reported that internal testing indicates the material meets all Panasonic specifications, though formal validation remains pending and is subject to Panasonic’s assessment over the coming months.
The Riverside facility, equipped with four graphitisation furnaces, is designed to eventually reach a nameplate capacity of 20,000 tonnes per annum. The equipment required for Panasonic’s qualification was commissioned and completed in October 2025, supporting the framing of this delivery as a late-stage rather than early-stage development.
The delivery aligns with Novonix’s broader strategy to localise battery supply chains in North America, a move supported by trade policies and incentives such as the Inflation Reduction Act. The company has also signed a binding offtake agreement with Panasonic for up to 10,000 tonnes of synthetic graphite between 2025 and 2028. However, the agreement includes conditions tied to achieving key production and qualification milestones, with the current target for Panasonic-linked mass production set for H2 2027.
Novonix’s cash balance stood at US$81.3 million as of December 2025, with a quarterly net cash outflow of US$9.7 million. The company has also drawn fully on its US$100 million convertible debenture facility with Yorkville Advisors, highlighting the capital-intensive nature of its scale-up phase.
While the C-sample delivery is a positive development, the next key milestone will be Panasonic’s formal validation. Investors will also be watching for operational consistency at Riverside, including stable production, consistent yields, and batch-to-batch quality, which are critical for qualification closure and long-term commercial success.
