NASA Recycles 75,000 Tons of Steel, Asphalt from Santa Susana Demolition

NASA has recycled over 75,000 tons of clean steel and asphalt from the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) demolition since 2014, restoring over 22 acres to natural habitat. The site, 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, has a complex history as a testing ground for space engines and a nuclear reactor with a partial meltdown in 1959. A 2007 study found slightly higher cancer incidence rates in residents within two miles of SSFL, leading to years of investigation by local and federal regulators. The cleanup efforts have been ongoing since then.
