Mexico says tribunal dismissed nearly all of Vulcan claims
Mexico has reportedly been cleared by a tribunal of most claims brought by Vulcan Materials Company in a long-standing arbitration case. The dispute, initiated in 2018 under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), centered on Mexico’s decision to shut down Vulcan’s quarry operations and restrict access to aggregate reserves. While the tribunal acknowledged that Mexico violated the agreement in several respects, it awarded only minimal damages to the U.S. company.
The ruling, which remains confidential pending its official release, effectively dismisses nearly all of Vulcan’s financial claims against Mexico. Vulcan is expected to address the outcome during its Q2 earnings call scheduled for July 29, 2026.
The case has drawn attention from investors and legal experts due to its implications for international investment disputes and the enforceability of trade agreements. The tribunal’s decision highlights the complexity of cross-border commercial litigation and the potential for limited financial remedies despite legal findings of non-compliance.
