IRS to Conduct In-Person Visits for Unresolved Tax Debts in Five US Cities

IRS Revenue Officers may visit taxpayers in Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas, New York, and Chicago to discuss outstanding tax debts, explain rights and options, and initiate collection procedures. The agency says in-person visits are rare, and taxpayers usually receive a letter beforehand. Only four types of employees, including Revenue Agents and Criminal Investigation Special Agents, are authorized to conduct in-person visits, carrying official identification. The IRS generally contacts taxpayers by mail and may call to discuss the examination before an audit visit.
