AbbVie and Gubra have announced that a key milestone has been achieved in the development of GUB014295, a long-acting amylin analog for the treatment of obesity. Under the terms of their 2025 license agreement, Gubra is now eligible to receive corresponding payments as part of the $1.875 billion in potential development, commercial, and sales milestone payments outlined in the deal. The achievement reflects progress in the clinical development of the compound, which is currently in Phase I trials.

The partnership, which marked AbbVie’s entry into the obesity treatment market, involves AbbVie taking the lead in global development and commercialization of GUB014295, while Gubra retains rights to milestone payments and royalties. The drug candidate, which activates amylin and calcitonin receptors, is being studied for its potential to suppress appetite and reduce food intake.

Industry analysts note that while the obesity market is highly competitive—with Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly dominating with GLP-1-based therapies—there remains significant demand for new treatment options. GUB014295 is positioned as a potential alternative, targeting a different physiological pathway than current market leaders.

With the obesity market projected to reach $102 billion by 2030, the milestone underscores the growing interest among pharmaceutical firms in expanding their presence in this therapeutic area.
