Atara Biotherapeutics (NASDAQ: ATRA) reported a net loss of $0.32 per share for the second quarter of 2025, compared to net income of $0.19 per share in the same period of 2024. The company’s financial performance reflects a significant shift from profitability to a loss, driven primarily by the accelerated recognition of deferred revenue in the first quarter of 2025 following the transfer of tab-cel development and safety responsibilities to Pierre Fabre Laboratories.

Total revenues for the second quarter of 2025 amounted to $17.6 million, a 39% decline from $28.6 million in the second quarter of 2024. This decrease was attributed to the reduced availability of deferred revenue for recognition after the transition of operational activities related to tab-cel.

Operating expenses for the second quarter of 2025 were $14.38 million, compared to $46.87 million in 2024. Research and development expenses decreased to $7.3 million from $33.3 million year-over-year, while general and administrative expenses dropped to $6.5 million from $8.9 million.

Atara’s cash and cash equivalents totaled $22.3 million as of June 30, 2025, compared to $13.8 million as of March 31, 2025. The company anticipates a reduction in full-year 2025 operating expenses by at least 60% compared to 2024, driven by the transfer of tab-cel activities to Pierre Fabre and operational efficiencies.

The company has resumed its evaluation of strategic options, including potential acquisitions, partnerships, or other business combinations. Additionally, Atara is eligible to receive a $40 million milestone payment upon FDA approval of the Biologics License Application (BLA) for tab-cel, which could significantly extend its cash runway.
