Amkor is said to explore stake sale in $1.5 billion China unit
Amkor Technology, a leading provider of semiconductor packaging and test services, has been reported to be exploring a potential stake sale in its $1.5 billion China unit, according to recent industry discussions. While no official announcement has been made, the company has previously demonstrated a strategic focus on expanding its global footprint, particularly in China, where it has invested heavily in advanced manufacturing capabilities. In 2015, Amkor announced expansion of its Shanghai facility, increasing its cleanroom space by 45% to meet growing demand for advanced packaging technologies in the region.
The company has also been active in other strategic initiatives, including recent $1.5 billion multi-year partnership with NVIDIA to expand its U.S. advanced packaging operations. This partnership includes a prepayment from NVIDIA to support capacity expansion in Arizona and the joint development of next-generation packaging technologies for AI and accelerated computing platforms.
Amkor’s ownership structure remains stable, with Kim family retaining over 49% of the company’s shares following a recent secondary offering of 10 million shares. The company has also implemented lock-up provisions to limit share sales by the selling stockholder and itself for defined periods following the offering.
Investors are advised to monitor Amkor’s SEC filings and official communications for updates on its strategic direction and any potential changes in its ownership or operational structure.
