NewsON, which aggregates local news from over 275 TV stations nationwide, will now be integrated into Zeam's core streaming service and renamed "NewsON. Powered by Zeam." The platform will continue to operate as a standalone service backed by Zeam's technology and monetization expertise. The acquisition comes as Zeam is looking to expand its offerings and broaden the reach of its public-facing services.
Zeam, founded in 2009, has been a pioneer in streaming technology, supporting live local broadcasts for a variety of platforms including Paramount+, NFL, Amazon, Apple TV, Roku, Hulu, and fuboTV. In 2024, Zeam launched its own streaming service, offering content from hundreds of local stations and partnering with broadcast groups like CBS, Gray Media, News Press & Gazette, Morgan Murphy, and Tegna.
The acquisition of NewsON will significantly expand Zeam's local TV footprint, now encompassing all 201 designated market areas as defined by Nielsen. This move follows Sinclair's exploration of strategic alternatives for its broadcast TV business, which includes potential acquisitions, partnerships, and business combinations. Sinclair has also been considering the separation of its Sinclair Ventures business through various transactions.
Zeam's CEO, Jack Perry, stated, "With NewsON coming under the Zeam umbrella, we are not only shaping the future of local broadcast journalism but also reinforcing its essential role in American communities. Through our joint resources, we are setting local broadcasters up for a future beyond linear." Kevin Cotlove, Sinclair's executive vice president and chief digital officer, added, "NewsON has been an important resource for connecting viewers with trusted local news from across the country. We're confident that under Zeam's leadership, the platform will continue to support stations and strengthen the value of local journalism."
This acquisition underscores the growing importance of streaming technology in the broadcast industry. Zeam's platform allows for dynamic ad insertion on a local level, giving stations greater ability to target specific consumers and generate more advertising revenue. The deal also highlights the increasing demand for hyper-local content and the potential for local stations to create original content independently of network affiliates.
