WhatsApp Rolls Out Real-Time Translation Feature for 3 Billion Users

Meta Platforms introduces a real-time translation feature on WhatsApp to ease cross-language chats among its 3 billion users. The translations are available in six languages on Android devices and 19 languages on iPhones. Users can long-press on a message and tap "Translate" to see it in another language, and Android users can enable automatic translation for an entire chat thread. The translations occur on the user's device, protecting their privacy.

Meta Platforms has rolled out a real-time translation feature for WhatsApp, aiming to facilitate cross-language communication among its 3 billion users. The new feature allows users to translate messages into their preferred language, making it easier for users to communicate regardless of language barriers.

The translation feature is available to both Android and iPhone users. Android users can access translations in six languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. iPhone users, however, have a broader range of options, with translations available in 19 languages, including Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.

To use the feature, users can long-press on a message and tap "Translate." This action allows them to select the language they want to translate from or to. Additionally, Android users have the option to enable automatic translation for an entire chat thread, ensuring that all future incoming messages in that conversation are translated.

Meta emphasizes that translations occur on the user's device, ensuring that messages remain encrypted and private. This move comes a few months after Apple launched live translation in Messages, highlighting the growing trend of incorporating real-time translation features into messaging apps.

The introduction of this feature is part of Meta's ongoing efforts to enhance user experience and connectivity. With more than 3 billion users in over 180 countries, WhatsApp is a crucial platform for Meta, and this update is expected to further strengthen its global presence.
