Whangārei's bid for Unesco Creative City status has been declined by Unesco New Zealand. The district, seeking designation as a City of Craft and Folk Art, was competing against Nelson for selection as New Zealand's candidate. Nelson has reportedly been selected to progress its application. Whangārei's unique creative heritage includes the Hundertwasser Art Centre, which features New Zealand's first dedicated public Māori art gallery.
