Vitalik Buterin: Ethereum Needs Moral Compass Amidst Industry Challenges
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has expressed his frustration with the moral compass of the blockchain community, stating that he has no interest in being part of the space if it lacks a moral foundation. In a text-based Ask Me Anything (AMA) hosted on the Tako platform, Buterin responded to a question about his most disappointing moment in the last year, highlighting an instance where someone criticized Ethereum for not being tolerant enough of "casinos" on the blockchain.
Buterin acknowledged that while some people may express such views online, his personal interactions with the community suggest that their values remain the same as before. He feels a responsibility to the community and believes that Ethereum needs everyone to work together to create the world they want to see. To achieve this, Buterin suggests that the Ethereum Foundation may need to be less neutral at the application layer and deliberately support certain things.
Buterin's comments come at a time when the blockchain industry is facing various challenges, including a recent market flash crash and the launch of new projects like HyperEVM and Monad Testnet. Despite these challenges, the total value locked (TVL) in decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols has increased significantly, indicating a growing interest in the sector.
The Ethereum community is now looking towards the future, with Buterin's comments serving as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a strong moral compass in the blockchain space. As the industry continues to evolve, it will be crucial for stakeholders to work together to create a sustainable and responsible ecosystem.
