Vattenfall, Volkswagen, and Energy Bank Partner on Bidirectional Charging Pilot Project

Vattenfall is launching a pilot project with Volkswagen and Energy Bank to test bidirectional charging. The project aims to explore the potential of electric vehicles (EVs) to provide grid services and stabilize the power grid. Volkswagen will provide EVs for the pilot, while Energy Bank will handle the charging and discharging process. The project is expected to help pave the way for wider adoption of EVs and the integration of renewable energy into the grid.

Stockholm, Sweden - Vattenfall, the Swedish state-owned energy group, has announced a pilot project in collaboration with Volkswagen and Energy Bank to explore the potential of bidirectional charging in electric vehicles (EVs). The project aims to test the capability of EVs to provide grid services and stabilize the power grid. Volkswagen will provide the EVs for the pilot, while Energy Bank will manage the charging and discharging process.

The pilot project, which is part of Vattenfall's broader strategy to increase electricity efficiency, involves 200 bidirectional chargers supplied by Ambibox in Germany. The installations will be conducted across various pilot clients, including private households and Volkswagen electric car dealers. Volkswagen's ID. models with 77 kWh batteries or larger have been prepared for this technology [1].

The primary goal of the project is to expand and ensure the quality of Vattenfall's existing V2H (Vehicle to Home) and V2G (Vehicle to Grid) pilot in Hudiksvall, Sweden. The project will examine functionality, customer experience, savings, and potential revenues. After evaluation, the goal is to achieve a commercial launch.
