The United Kingdom's latest breakup threat is rooted in its long history of union through conquest, legislation, and political settlements over several centuries. Wales was first incorporated into the English system in the 16th century, followed by Scotland through the Union of the Crowns in 1603 and the Acts of Union in 1707. Ireland joined later, with the British and Irish parliaments passing the Acts of Union in 1800, creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The latest pact signed by Welsh, Scottish, and Northern Irish leaders does not change the UK's constitutional arrangements and has no legal force.
